Age verification is any method a service uses to confirm how old a user is before giving them access to something. Online it ranges from a checkbox saying "I am over 18" to checking a government ID or analyzing a face. For AI products, it has become a legal question, because lawmakers worry about chatbots that act like friends or romantic partners with children.
Common methods
- Self-declaration. The user types a birth date. It is easy and easy to fake.
- ID check. The user uploads a government ID, which is checked by software or a person. It is more reliable and raises privacy concerns.
- Age estimation. A system estimates age from a face scan or other signals, without needing a name.
- Account or device signals. A payment card, mobile carrier record or app store setting can show that a user is an adult.
- Third-party verification. A separate company confirms age and tells the service only "over 18," not who you are.
Each has tradeoffs between accuracy, privacy and how much friction it adds. Rules often require more than one option, so users who do not want to share an ID have an alternative.
Why it matters for AI
Chatbots can talk in a warm, personal way, remember details with AI memory, and take on characters, as AI companions do. Regulators worry about children forming attachments, being given harmful advice, or seeing sexual content. Some laws therefore restrict certain chatbot behaviors for minors and require the company to check age first. Because a company cannot know who is a minor without checking, the check can end up applying to everyone.
What builders have to decide
- Which features need a gate and which do not.
- Which methods to offer, and how to handle people who fail or refuse a check.
- How to store the result. Many rules say to delete age data soon after use.
- How to keep AI guardrails working for users who are, or might be, minors.
What users should know
Age checks often involve sharing sensitive data. Look at what is collected, who gets it and how long it is kept. A good system confirms your age without keeping a record of your face or ID.
Age verification does not make an AI safe on its own. It is one layer, alongside content limits, monitoring and red teaming to find where those limits fail.
