What it is
Agentic commerce is shopping done by software acting for you. Instead of searching, comparing tabs and typing in a card number, you tell an AI agent what you need, such as "reorder the printer paper under $40" or "find a hotel near the venue," and the agent finds options, weighs them against your rules and, if allowed, completes the purchase.
It goes a step beyond a chatbot that answers shopping questions or a recommendation engine that suggests products. The agent acts.
How it works
Most setups combine a few pieces:
- A request with limits. You set preferences, a budget and which purchases need your approval.
- A way into the store. The agent either operates a site the way a person would, as a browser agent, or uses an official interface the merchant offers, often built on a standard such as the Model Context Protocol through tool use.
- Safe payment. Many designs keep the agent from seeing your raw card details, passing a limited token or leaving the final payment step to the merchant or to you.
- A record. Orders made by an agent are logged so you can review and reverse them.
Some visions go further, with a shopper's agent negotiating with a seller's agent.
Why it matters
For shoppers, it removes tedious comparison work. For merchants, it changes who they are selling to: product data, prices and policies must be readable by software, and some retailers welcome agents while others block them. For anyone building agents, it is a test of trust, because money is involved.
Risks to know
- Overspending or wrong items if limits are loose or the request was vague.
- Prompt injection, where a page or message tricks the agent into buying something.
- Unclear responsibility when an agent makes a mistake, since refund and liability rules are still catching up.
Sensible settings
Require approval by default, set a spending cap, review the order trail and raise limits only after you have seen the agent behave. AI guardrails on the merchant side, such as blocking agents that break the terms, serve the same purpose from the other direction.
