Anthropic red team: small models may soon self-replicate across cheap IoT devices
Anthropic's Frontier Red Team says models of 30B parameters or fewer may soon replicate across poorly secured IoT devices, with a doubling time of days. In simplified tests on 8 nodes, GLM-5.2 reached all 8 in 4 of 5 trials; the exploit step was deliberately trivial. Anthropic's trend fit puts a small model at that level by end of 2026. CNBC, FT, Al Jazeera and The Decoder now cover it.
