Microsoft Research releases StudentSim to test AI tutors on simulated students

Microsoft Research describes StudentSim, a system that trains a simulator of an individual student from de-identified learner records, to evaluate AI tutors before real learners see them. In chess, a tutor trained with StudentSim as the reward reached 90.5% accuracy versus 75.7% without RL, Microsoft says. Paper and code are public; it is not a product.
