Google limits free Gemini to Flash-Lite from October 9

From October 9, the free Gemini app offers only Flash-Lite, and Google AI Plus subscribers lose Pro on a date Google will email them, per Google's help center. Free Gemini is now a sample. Find out this week whether the sample does your work.

Free Gemini just got smaller.

Starting Friday, October 9, people who use the Gemini app without a subscription get one model: Flash-Lite. Flash and Pro move to paid plans, according to Google's help center. Android Headlines reported the change on October 3. It takes effect this week.

Google redrew every plan line at once

Google's page, titled "Changes to Gemini model access and limits," sets out who gets what after the change:

  • Without a plan: Flash-Lite only.
  • Google AI Plus: Flash-Lite and Flash.
  • Google AI Pro: Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro.
  • Google AI Ultra: Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro, plus Deep Think.

The October 9 date is for free users. For AI Plus, Google says subscribers "should receive an email that explains when these changes will take effect for you." So Plus loses Pro too, on a date Google has not published.

The limits change shape as well. Google describes "compute-based usage limits that will refresh every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit," set by how complex your prompts are, which features you use and how long the chat runs. Measured against the standard allowance, AI Plus gets twice as much and AI Pro four times as much. Ultra gets 5x or 20x the AI Pro allowance, depending on the plan.

Android Headlines puts Google's entry-level AI plan at $5, against $8 for ChatGPT's and $20 for Claude's.

The free tier was the front door

Yes, every AI company trims its free plan sooner or later. This trim lands on the people who matter most to Gemini's future: the ones still deciding.

After Friday, the only Gemini a free user meets is Flash-Lite. Google is betting you will pay to get the bigger models.

The five-hour limit matters too. A cap measured in compute, rather than in messages, means a long chat with heavy features runs out sooner than a quick question does. You will not know your limit until you hit it.

For AI Plus subscribers, the deal shifts twice. You keep Flash. You lose Pro. And Pro now sits one plan up.

What to do before Friday

Start with what you actually use Gemini for.

If free Gemini drafts your emails or summarizes your reading, try those same tasks on Flash-Lite now. If Flash-Lite holds, nothing changes for you.

If Flash is your daily model, AI Plus keeps it. If you rely on Pro for long documents, code or research, you need AI Pro after the change, and Plus subscribers should watch their inbox for the date.

If you share Gemini with a team on free accounts, tell them now. A model that quietly gets smaller mid-project produces worse work before anyone notices why.

Watch the email, then the line

The first date is October 9. The second is whatever Google's email gives AI Plus subscribers.

After that, watch whether Google moves the line again once it sees how many free users pay. A plan map that changes this much at once can change again.

Test Flash-Lite this week. Then decide what Gemini is worth to you.
