ChatGPT now reads your Chrome tabs and works in them
OpenAI updated its ChatGPT extension for Chrome on Oct. 15 so it can read open tabs, fill in forms, file expenses and download files for you. That puts an agent in the browser where your logged-in accounts already live.

ChatGPT just moved into the browser you already use. You no longer have to switch browsers to get OpenAI's agent.
OpenAI updated its ChatGPT extension for Chrome on Oct. 15, according to its Chrome Web Store listing. The listing says ChatGPT can now summarize and answer questions about any open tab, organize and clean up your tabs, search live and logged-in websites, and take actions in the browser for you.
The extension does the work now
The actions are specific. The listing says ChatGPT can create and edit documents, spreadsheets and slides, enter data into systems such as timesheets or content management systems, file expenses, download files or images in bulk, and test websites.
It comes in two modes, PiunikaWeb reports. Chat reads your tabs and answers questions about them. Work takes actions such as filling in forms, sending messages and downloading files, and requires at least a Plus subscription, per the same report.
The listing says the extension can run in the background without taking over your active session, and that ChatGPT asks permission before it references your browser history or transfers files.
The listing counts about 7 million users.
PiunikaWeb also lists Edge, Brave and Opera as compatible Chromium browsers.
OpenAI gave up its own browser to get here
OpenAI shut down its standalone Atlas browser and said the sidebar and tab automation would move to Chrome, PiunikaWeb reports. This update is that move.
Here's the thing: most people were never going to switch browsers for an assistant. Meeting them in Chrome puts an AI agent in the tabs where their email, their work tools and their bank already sit. That is the opportunity and the risk at once.
An agent that reads every open tab also reads whatever is written on those pages. That is how prompt injection works: a page carries instructions, and the model follows them. An agent that is logged in and can send messages or file expenses makes that attack worth more to whoever tries it.
Set it up before you turn on Work mode
Keep a separate Chrome profile for agent work. Close the tabs you would not hand to a stranger.
Start with Chat mode on research, where the worst outcome is a bad summary. Move to Work mode on chores like tab cleanup or bulk downloads before you let it near forms that send money or messages.
If you manage browsers for a team, decide now whether the extension is allowed on them. The listing's rating sits at 2.4 out of 5 from 915 reviews, so expect questions from both directions.
What to watch
Watch whether OpenAI publishes what Work mode confirms before it sends, pays or posts, and what it refuses to do on logged-in sites. Then watch how Google answers inside Chrome itself, where its Gemini auto browse feature already competes.
Your browser has an agent now. Give it a smaller room.
