Anthropic's junior tech hiring falls to 9%, from 27%
Anthropic says junior hires fell from 27% of its technical hiring to 9%, while median meeting time rose 20% in a year, in a report on its own workforce published Oct. 16. The bottleneck has moved to human attention, and the company selling the tool says so.

The company that sells the AI writing the code is hiring fewer juniors to write it.
Anthropic published Employment at Anthropic on Oct. 16, a report that uses its own hiring, calendar and survey data to show how its workforce changed as staff handed work to Claude. TechCrunch covered it on Saturday.
The junior rung shrank fastest
The number, from Anthropic's report:
Junior hires fell from 27% of technical hiring to 9%.
Junior staff now make up 14% of technical departments, down from 21% in early 2025, Anthropic says. Junior job postings fell sharply after December 2025.
Technical departments shrank from 61% of all employees to 56% over the last year. Anthropic says hiring in sales, finance and recruiting outpaced technical hiring, and that part of the shift could reflect non-technical staff building software themselves. The company says it has tripled in size in the last year but gives no headcount.
About a third of machine learning managers and a fifth of software engineering managers told Anthropic in April that they are hiring less because of AI.
Output went up, and so did meetings
Anthropic says code commits per engineer run at about five times the pace of six months earlier. By August, it says, agents worked six times as many hours as the people handling them. Agent hours first passed human hours in March 2026.
The people got busier in a different way. Median meeting time per employee rose 20% year over year, and 16% for technical individual contributors. Anthropic says Claude sessions spent about 80% of their time idle, waiting on a human.
One engineer in the report describes "an army of Claudes, with every one asking for my attention." The report concedes that more code does not necessarily mean better code or business impact, though Anthropic says it sees no sign that code quality is falling.
What it means for you
Not the code. Not the model. Your attention is the scarce part now.
That's Anthropic's own finding, and it's the useful one. If your team runs AI agents, the work moves to briefing them, reading what they produce and deciding what ships. Budget your people's hours for review the way you once budgeted them for typing.
If you're early in your career, read the 9% plainly. A lab that tripled in a year is taking fewer juniors into technical roles.
Anthropic says interviewers' comments on candidates' AI tool use have tripled for technical roles and quadrupled for non-technical ones since 2024. That's the skill to show.
Be fair to the source. This is one fast-growing company describing itself with its own surveys. Anthropic says it has prioritized moving people into new roles internally and is setting up an early warning system for jobs at risk.
What to watch
Watch whether other large employers publish numbers this specific. Most won't.
Then look at your own team's calendar.
