Meta blames a Claude tool for No Kings Instagram suspension
Meta says a Claude tool reading profiles, posts and hashtags at about four times the normal rate tripped its bot defenses and got the No Kings Coalition's Instagram account suspended Saturday. If your agent browses while logged in as you, Meta judges you by its pace.

Your AI agent can get your account suspended. Meta just said so out loud.
On Saturday, during nationwide protests, Meta suspended the No Kings Coalition's Instagram account. On Sunday it blamed a Claude tool, according to Bloomberg.
Meta changed its explanation overnight
Andy Stone, Meta's vice president of communications, first said that unusually high rates of posting, sharing or commenting had set off the company's automated systems, Bloomberg reported. He called the suspension "clearly" an error.
On Sunday, Stone revised that account in a social media post. Meta's engineers traced the trigger to "reading" activity, he wrote. A tool from Anthropic's Claude was accessing profiles, posts and hashtags in intense bursts, at a pace Meta put at:
About four times the normal rate.
Stone said the requests "resembled automated bot traffic rather than an ordinary human browsing our systems." He added: "We want to reiterate our sincere apology for the error."
Meta says an automated review about an hour later found the account should not have been removed, and it was restored. Administrative access took longer to come back. The coalition says the page was unavailable for about 90 minutes and that full access returned at 5:33 p.m. New York time on Saturday, according to Bloomberg.
The timing was bad for the group. The suspension landed during its early-voting push ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms, and the coalition says millions of people joined nearly 3,000 events in all 50 states and Washington.
Stone did not say which Claude tool was involved, who was running it or what it was doing. Bloomberg's report carries no comment from Anthropic.
Your agent spends your account's reputation
Here's the thing. A browser agent logged in as you is you, as far as the platform can tell.
It reads at machine speed, in bursts. Defenses built to catch scrapers then do exactly what they were built to do.
Yes, the explanation is convenient for Meta. The first version was wrong, the second names another company's tool without naming the operator, and the account that went dark belonged to a protest group on its biggest day. Asking hard questions about that is fair.
The mechanism Stone describes is still real, and it applies to your accounts too.
The suspension came first. The review came an hour later. For an account people rely on, that hour is the cost.
Before you point an agent at a platform
If you run an AI agent inside accounts you can't afford to lose, treat the platform's bot rules as part of the setup. A few habits cover most of the risk:
- Use a separate account, or the platform's official API, for anything that reads at volume.
- Slow the agent down. Bursts are what Stone says tripped the system.
- Keep the account other people depend on for human-paced work, and let the agent read elsewhere.
- Know how to reach a person at the platform, and keep proof of ownership ready, before you need either.
Scrapers have lived by these rules for years. They are new for everyone who just installed an agent that browses for them.
What to watch this week
Watch whether Anthropic says a Claude product was involved and how it paces requests. Watch whether Meta says what "normal" means, since Stone's number was a multiple with no baseline. And watch the coalition's national organizing call on Wednesday for its own account of the outage.
Throttle your agents. The platform won't ask first.
Questions people ask
Why was the No Kings Instagram account suspended?
Meta says its automated security system suspended the account after a Claude tool read profiles, posts and hashtags at about four times the normal rate, in bursts that looked like bot traffic. Meta calls the suspension an error and has apologized.
How long was the No Kings Instagram account down?
The coalition says the page was unavailable for about 90 minutes on Saturday and that full access returned at 5:33 p.m. New York time, according to Bloomberg.
Which Claude tool triggered the Instagram suspension?
Meta has not said. Andy Stone's statement did not name the tool, who was running it or what it was doing, and Bloomberg's report has no comment from Anthropic.
Can an AI agent get my Instagram account banned?
Meta's explanation says yes: an agent reading at machine speed while logged in as you can trip the bot defenses that protect the platform. Slow it down, or use a separate account or an official API for volume reading.
