Apple Intelligence comes to China with Alibaba's Qwen
Apple says its first Apple Intelligence features reach iPhones in China with iOS 27.3 in December, with Alibaba's Qwen inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. Apple didn't build one assistant for the world. It built a slot, and Qwen fills it in China.

Apple just showed how it ships AI in a market it can't serve alone. Keep its own models, plug in a local one.
Apple announced on Oct. 31 that the first Apple Intelligence features for iPhone users in China arrive with iOS 27.3 in December. Alibaba's Qwen powers part of it. Developers can test the features in the latest iOS developer beta starting Nov. 4.
Qwen sits on top of Apple's own models
Apple says the China features are built on its own generative models.
On top of that, Apple says it partnered with Alibaba to add support for Qwen in some Apple Intelligence experiences. People in China can call on Qwen directly inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, according to the release.
There, Qwen handles text and image understanding. It answers questions about photos and about documents such as PDFs and presentations, and it can write new content from scratch. Users sign in with a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple.
The rest of the list will look familiar to anyone outside China. Apple names Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, Clean Up in Photos, Genmoji, summaries in Mail and notifications, summaries of audio transcriptions in Notes and of phone calls, and typed conversations with Siri.
What is missing matters as much. Apple says Siri AI and the other next-generation features it showed at WWDC 2026 are not part of this release.
The model is now a regional part
Yes, December is still a promise. But this time Apple named the month, the beta date and the partner, in its own newsroom.
The design is the story. Apple's models do the base work. A local partner's model takes the requests people send its way in that market. Change the partner and the same phone ships somewhere new.
It works like model routing with a border in it. Some requests go to another company's model, and the country decides which company.
For you, the lesson travels. Which model answers is becoming a setting inside the product. The phone in your hand stays the same. The model behind some answers changes when you cross a border.
What it takes to get it
Apple's release sets out who gets the features and when:
- iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Duo, iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air.
- Siri and the device language set to Simplified Chinese or English.
- Supported AirPods on current firmware for Live Translation in conversation.
- The developer beta from Nov. 4, and the public release with iOS 27.3 in December.
Apple says support for its other platforms will follow once the necessary approvals are in. It gives no date.
If you build an iPhone app with text fields, share sheets or document flows, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence will touch your content in China the way they do elsewhere. The difference is which company's model may be reading it when a user asks for more.
That is worth a test pass on the beta, not a guess in December.
What to watch
Watch the Nov. 4 beta for how often Siri hands a request to Qwen, and how clearly it tells the user when it does.
Then watch which partner Apple names in the next market that needs one. The slot is built. It won't stay empty.
