Anthropic's Claude can now read your bank accounts
Anthropic launched Personal Finance in Claude on Nov. 5, a read-only beta that links bank and card accounts through Plaid for US Pro, Max and Ultra plans. Read-only is the right first step, and it is what makes this worth trying.

The chatbot can see your bank account now. It still cannot touch it.
Anthropic launched Personal Finance in Claude on Nov. 5. You link bank and card accounts through Plaid, then ask money questions in plain language, and Claude answers from your actual balances and transactions.
Read-only, two years deep
The beta is rolling out to Pro, Max and Ultra plans in the US, starting the week of the announcement, Anthropic says.
You sign in to your bank through Plaid and approve access, so Claude never receives your bank password. For the accounts you choose, Claude can see the bank and account name, type, last four digits, balances, credit limits and up to two years of transactions.
Anthropic says Claude can total your spending by category and compare it with past months. It can flag duplicate charges, unexpected fees and bills that creep up, explain terms like APR and total the interest you've paid. It can also build spending charts, bill calendars and dashboards you keep adjusting.
The limit is written plainly. "Personal Finance can't move, manage, or invest your money," Anthropic writes, and the feature is not designed to give investment advice.
Read-only means read-only. Full stop.
What it does not sell you matters most
Yes, a chatbot reading your bank feed sounds like a privacy problem. Anthropic's answer is mostly in what it left out.
Anthropic says the feature carries no ads or sponsored recommendations, and it does not offer its own credit cards, loans or savings accounts. Conversations inside the Personal Finance hub are not used to train its models. Chats outside the hub follow your usual privacy settings.
A money assistant with nothing to sell you has fewer reasons to steer you. That is worth more than the charts.
The weak spot is accuracy. Anthropic says Claude can make mistakes and tells you to check important figures with your bank. A hallucination in a spending total is an annoyance. In a tax figure, it is a problem.
How to use it without regret
If you are on a paid US plan, a careful start looks like this:
- Connect only the accounts you want analyzed. Anthropic says unlinking an account cuts off Claude's access to its data.
- Ask the dull questions first: duplicate subscriptions, surprise fees, the bill that quietly went up. Those are the answers you can verify in a minute.
- Keep money conversations inside the hub if you care about what trains the model.
- Treat any number you plan to act on as a draft until your bank statement agrees.
If you are not on a paid plan or not in the US, you wait.
Watch the step past read-only
Anthropic calls Personal Finance a first step. It says it wants Claude to work alongside licensed financial professionals and regulated firms, and it is inviting banks, wealth managers and financial services companies to help shape that.
That is the line to watch: the day "read my accounts" becomes "act on my accounts." The trust question changes completely then.
Until then, use it for the audit, not the advice.
