What is Generative AI?

Generative AI is Generative AI is artificial intelligence that creates new content, such as text, images, audio, video or code, by learning patterns from large amounts of existing examples.

Generative AI is a category of AI systems that produce new content instead of only sorting or predicting from existing data. Ask one for an email, a logo, a song, a function in Python or a short video, and it generates something that did not exist before.

How it differs from other AI

Earlier, widely used AI was mostly analytical. It labeled a photo, flagged a suspicious transaction or recommended a movie. Generative AI flips the direction: instead of recognizing what is in a picture, it creates a picture from a description.

How it works

Generative systems are trained on huge collections of examples, such as text, images or recordings. During training they learn the statistical patterns in that training data: which words tend to follow which, what a cat typically looks like, how a melody resolves. When you give a prompt, the model uses those patterns to produce a new output that fits.

Two main approaches dominate:

  • Language models. A large language model built on the transformer architecture generates text one piece at a time, each piece chosen based on everything before it. The same approach extends to code.
  • Diffusion models. A diffusion model starts from random noise and removes it step by step until an image, audio clip or video matches the prompt.

A helpful comparison is a musician who has listened to enormous amounts of music. They are not replaying a recording. They improvise something new in a style they have absorbed. The model does not store and copy its sources the way a file does, though it can sometimes reproduce parts of what it saw.

Strengths and weaknesses

Generative AI is fast, flexible and good at drafting, brainstorming, summarizing and transforming content. Its weaknesses are just as important. It can state falsehoods with confidence, a failure called hallucination. It can reflect biases in its data, raise copyright questions, and be misused to create deepfakes and spam.

Multimodal models

Many current systems handle several types of content at once. A multimodal model can take an image and a question together and answer in text, or turn a text description into a video.

Using it well

Treat output as a strong first draft. Check facts you plan to rely on, give clear instructions, and keep a person responsible for the final result.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between AI and generative AI?

AI is the broad field of machines doing tasks that need intelligence. Generative AI is the part that creates new content such as text, images, audio and video.

Can generative AI make mistakes?

Yes. It can produce confident but false statements, called hallucinations, so important facts should be checked against reliable sources.

OpenAI will watermark ChatGPT text written in the EU

OpenAI said Monday it will add an invisible watermark to eligible ChatGPT and Codex text generated in the EU over the coming weeks, and API customers anywhere can now opt in. It is a compliance signal, not a lie detector, and OpenAI says so itself.
