What it is
A world model is an AI system that learns the rules of an environment from data, then uses them to predict how that environment changes. Show it a scene and an action, such as "turn left" or "push the door," and it produces what would plausibly happen next.
A chat model predicts the next word. A world model predicts the next moment.
How it works
Most world models are trained on large amounts of video, game footage or sensor data, sometimes paired with the actions taken. From these, the model learns patterns: objects fall, doors open, a character moves when you press a key. It then generates new frames or states that follow those patterns.
Some are built to run in real time, so a person or program can act inside the generated scene and see it respond. Others work behind the scenes, letting an AI system imagine the results of several possible actions before choosing one, rather than trying each in the real world.
Under the hood, many use the same ideas as image and video generators, which are multimodal models that work with more than text. The key difference is the action loop: the output depends on what you do.
What they are used for
- Games and interactive media: generating playable scenes without hand-built levels.
- Robotics: practicing in simulated environments that are cheap and safe, before touching real hardware.
- Planning for AI agents: testing actions in imagination first.
- Training data: producing varied scenarios for other models to learn from, including through reinforcement learning.
Limits to know
World models learn what looks plausible, not what is physically guaranteed. Over a long sequence, errors pile up, objects can change shape, and the physics can drift. A scene that looks right is not a verified simulation. For safety-critical use, outputs still need checking against real tests.
They are also expensive to run in real time, since generating each frame is a full round of inference.
Why it matters to you
If you build games, robotics or simulation tools, world models may soon change how you create environments and test ideas. If you use AI for everyday writing and analysis, they matter less today, but they are a main route labs are exploring toward systems that understand and act in the physical world.
World models are not a single product category. Some are research systems, and some are generated video tools. When a company calls something a world model, ask what it predicts, whether it responds to actions, and how long it stays consistent.
