Anthropic gives startups a free year of Claude Team
Anthropic expanded Claude for Startups on Tuesday: eligible startups get a free year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats, plus $1,000 in API credits. It is a bid to be your default by year three, and still a fair deal if you read the fine print.

If you run a young startup, Anthropic just took a line off your software bill.
Anthropic expanded its Claude for Startups program on Tuesday. Eligible startups get one year of Claude Team free for up to five Premium seats, plus $1,000 in Claude API credits. TechCrunch reports the new version launched at Anthropic's SF Tech Week event.
Who qualifies, and what you get
The bar is low. A company qualifies if it was founded in the last five years or raised funding in the last two, according to the program page. Bootstrapped, pre-seed and venture-backed startups are all eligible.
The package, per Anthropic:
- One year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats, for organizations new to Claude Team
- $1,000 in Claude API credits, which expire six months after they are granted
- Higher API rate limits
- Up to $45,000 in partner offers through what Anthropic calls the Claude Startup Stack
- Virtual office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team, plus events and hackathons
You apply from the Claude Console with a company email that matches your website's domain and a short description of what you are building. Anthropic says decisions take minutes when automated and two to three business days when reviewed by hand.
Cheap seats, long customer
Anthropic's stated reason, quoted by TechCrunch: "We created this program because we believe the benefits of AI will reach most people through the companies that build on top of models, rather than through the models alone."
The business logic is older than AI. Get a startup's team working in your tools in year one, and you are the default in year three, when it has fifty seats and a real API bill.
It is still a fair deal for you, as long as you know what you are trading.
Read the fine print first
Three limits matter.
The API credits work only on Anthropic's own API, not on AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. If your stack runs Claude through a cloud provider, the $1,000 does not help there.
The credits expire in six months. Spend them on real evaluation work, not idle testing.
The free year applies only to organizations new to Claude Team. If you already pay for it, this is not a refund.
What to watch
Watch what happens at month thirteen, when the free year ends and five seats become a line item. And watch whether OpenAI and Google answer with startup packages of their own.
Apply if you qualify. Calendar the renewal.
