Microsoft fences in Windows agents as Nvidia PCs ship

The laptop is the headline. The sandbox is the news.

At an event in San Francisco on October 7, Microsoft and Nvidia put prices and ship dates on Windows PCs built around Nvidia's RTX Spark chip. Microsoft also made Microsoft Execution Containers, its containment layer for AI agents, generally available on Windows 11.

Prices, dates and a fence

Microsoft and Nvidia introduced RTX Spark in June. What is new is that you can order the machines.

The Surface Laptop Ultra is $2,599.99 and on preorder, per Microsoft's product page, with availability beginning October 16, according to Microsoft's Windows blog. It has up to 128GB of unified memory, and the same blog says it runs models exceeding 120 billion parameters locally.

The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box starts at $5,999.99, with 128GB of unified memory and up to one petaflop of AI compute, according to its product page. Microsoft says it ships to US customers in November. RTX Spark laptops from ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and MSI went on preorder Wednesday and ship October 16.

The software change is the containment layer, called MXC. Per Microsoft's developer blog, organizations write policies for which files and networks an agent can reach. Windows enforces them at runtime, and the policies sit outside the agent's control.

Microsoft lists Codex, GitHub Copilot, Replit and LM Studio among the agents that support MXC today. Anthropic's Claude Code, Manus and Perplexity are listed as coming.

"We needed to make the desktop the most secure place for agents to execute," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said at the event, as quoted on Nvidia's blog.

The fence matters more than the chip

What keeps most companies from letting an agent loose on a work laptop isn't speed. It's that nobody could say what the agent was allowed to touch.

MXC is Microsoft's answer, written into the operating system. That is a bigger change for a security team than any inference benchmark.

About those benchmarks. Microsoft says RTX Spark PCs are 2.1 times faster to the first token than a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 Pro and 64GB, in testing Microsoft commissioned. Nvidia's own tests, cited in the same post, put image generation 4.3 times faster and video generation 6.2 times faster. Windows Latest notes Microsoft gave no CPU or battery life comparison with the MacBook.

What it means for you

If you manage Windows fleets, MXC is the piece to test this month. Microsoft's developer blog says Intune policy for MXC containers is coming soon, so plan for the pilot before the full rollout.

If you write code, the question is local against cloud. A $5,999.99 box that runs a coding model up to 120 billion parameters on your desk changes the math if your API bill is large and steady. It doesn't if you burst.

Microsoft also says Copilot on Copilot+ PCs will gain local context, local actions and local models, expected to begin rolling out in the coming months. That is a promise, not a ship date.

What to watch

October 16 is when the laptops land and independent reviews start. Watch for battery life and whether the 2.1 times claim holds on retail units.

Then watch the MXC partner list. When Claude Code moves from coming to supported, most of the agents developers run every day will sit inside the fence.
