The number everyone will quote is $16.8 billion. The word that matters is profitable.

Anthropic told prospective investors at a closed meeting that its third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, the Financial Times reported, as relayed by Yahoo Finance. The FT says Anthropic also told them it was profitable on an adjusted basis.

Anthropic has not published the figures. They come from a private meeting, as reported.

Growth is slowing, from a very high base

Yahoo Finance's account of the FT report puts second-quarter revenue at $11.5 billion. SiliconANGLE, citing CNBC, has $11.6 billion. Either way, the jump is about 45% in one quarter, by SiliconANGLE's math.

About 45%, in three months.

Most companies would frame that number. It is also slower than the spring. SiliconANGLE cites Wall Street Journal figures of $4.8 billion for the first quarter, which means revenue more than doubled from Q1 to Q2.

SiliconANGLE adds two caveats worth keeping. It is not clear whether $16.8 billion is gross or net revenue. And it is unclear how Anthropic defines "adjusted" profitability, which nobody outside the meeting has seen.

Your supplier says it makes money

Until now, every price and usage limit you got from an AI lab came from a company whose finances you could not see.

Here's the thing. A lab that says it is profitable, even on its own adjusted terms, has less reason to squeeze you on price to close a gap. It will also answer to public shareholders soon, and they will want margins to keep rising. Both pressures end up on your invoice, pulling in opposite directions.

The IPO is what turns leaks into disclosure. Anthropic privately filed paperwork with the SEC on June 1, per Yahoo Finance, and Wall Street is waiting for the public S-1. SiliconANGLE reports the listing is widely expected in November, at a targeted valuation of up to $2 trillion. Its $65 billion round in May valued it at $965 billion, according to the same report.

The comparison with OpenAI, whose run rate TopFive reported is near $50 billion, stays rough for now. A quarter's revenue and an annualized run rate are different measures, and neither company has filed audited numbers.

What to read in the S-1

When the public filing lands, skip the vision section. Read it like a supplier audit:

  • How much revenue comes from the largest customers. If a few platforms carry the business, their deals shape your terms.
  • What compute costs look like against revenue, and which way that trend runs. That is your future price, early.

If you run Claude in production, it is also a good week to check your contract for price change and notice terms. Know what you agreed to before the company has quarterly targets to hit.

What to watch

The public S-1, and whether its revenue line matches the $16.8 billion investors heard this week. Then the first earnings call, where "adjusted" has to be explained in public.

Read the S-1 before you sign your next renewal.

OpenAI's revenue run rate is near $50B, not $70B

OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue is approaching $50 billion, the Financial Times reported, per TechCrunch on Thursday, about $20 billion below the figure that circulated a week earlier. The gap comes from how the number was counted, and it makes every AI run-rate comparison suspect.
