Walmart picked a side in the agent shopping fight. It opened the door.
Walmart said on October 21 that AI agents can now shop Walmart and Sam's Club for customers through a beta Walmart Agent Gateway, with Agent Profiles that let shoppers require approval or set a spending limit arriving within a month. Agents never get your card number.
How Walmart's Agent Gateway and profiles work
Walmart's announcement describes two pieces.
The first is the Walmart Agent Gateway, open in beta to companies and developers. It gives agents a direct way to search and buy instead of clicking through the website. TechCrunch reports it is an MCP server, built on the Model Context Protocol that Anthropic created.
The second is the Agent Profile. Walmart says one is created the first time an agent shops for you through the gateway, and you link it by signing in. Each agent's orders show up separately from yours. You can require approval for every purchase, or let the agent buy within a cap, and Walmart's examples are $50, $100 and $200. You can delete a profile at any time.
Walmart compares it to adding a cardholder to a credit card.
The rules for agents are blunt. Walmart says agents "don't receive customers' payment-card information," cannot add or change payment methods, and can reach only the data a task needs. Approval is required by default. Agents that break the terms "will be blocked from Walmart's site."
On price, Walmart says: "We price products, not people." Agents see the same prices you do.
Walmart names Meta's Muse, ChatGPT and Gemini as existing shopping integrations. TechCrunch reports CEO John Furner announced the expansion at the Masters of Scale Summit, and that a Walmart+ membership is not required.
Amazon is going the other way
TechCrunch reports Amazon has begun blocking AI agents from making purchases for shoppers, and some travel and booking sites have shut agents out entirely.
So Walmart and Amazon now disagree on the most basic question in agent shopping: is your agent welcome?
Walmart's answer comes with guardrails that make it easier to say yes. No card details in the agent's hands. Spending caps you set. A separate order trail so you can see what the bot bought. Those are the pieces that would make a cautious shopper, or a cautious finance team, comfortable letting software spend money.
That trade is the right one. Retailers that block agents will not stop them. They will just lose the order to someone who did not.
What to do if you build or use agents
If you build a shopping or assistant product, apply for the gateway beta. An official route beats a browser agent clicking through pages that can change under it, and Walmart has said it will block agents that ignore its terms.
If you are a shopper, set the approval requirement first. Raise the cap only after you have watched what your agent buys for a few weeks.
If you run a store, read Walmart's terms as a template. Approval by default, card details withheld, separate profiles and a block for bad actors is a policy you can copy.
What to watch
Agent Profiles are due within a month. Watch which agents show up on day one, and whether Amazon holds its line.
Then watch your own cart.
