Stop copying drafts out of the chat window.

Google said on Oct. 29 that the Gemini app can now generate, preview and edit files directly in the conversation. Documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets and code all open inside the chat. Google says the feature is available to all users, in every language where the Gemini app is offered.

The chat window is now the editor

Google describes three ways to work on a file. You can expand it to full screen and type changes yourself. You can highlight a passage and ask Gemini a question about it. Or you can highlight it and have Gemini refine it.

Google's example is a student who uploads handwritten lecture notes and gets back a PDF study guide. The student then edits it by hand, by highlighting, or by asking follow-up questions.

The formats Google lists are PDF, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, plain text and code.

There is one limit worth knowing. PDF preview and editing work on the web and on mobile. Every other format is web only for now.

Why the round trip mattered

Here's the thing about chatbot drafts. The model writes, you paste, you fix, and the model never sees your fixes. Your next request starts from its version, not yours.

Editing in place is Google's answer to that: one file, worked on by both of you, in the same window where you ask for changes.

It also pulls the first draft away from the editor. Google already makes Docs, Sheets and Slides. Putting editing inside Gemini is a bet that you would rather start in the chat and only open the full app when you must.

Yes, chatbots have offered side panels and canvases before. This one counts because it reaches every Gemini app user at once and speaks the file formats offices already trade.

What to try first

Start with jobs where the first draft is the slow part:

  • Turn meeting notes into a one-page PDF brief, then fix what the model got wrong by hand instead of re-prompting.
  • Ask for a slide deck outline, then highlight the weakest slide and ask for a sharper one.
  • Paste a messy table and ask for a clean spreadsheet you can correct in place.

Mind what the announcement leaves out. Google's post names no plan tiers, no file size limits and nothing about export. Check how the file leaves Gemini before you build a habit around it.

What to watch

Watch whether the other formats reach mobile, since that is where a quick fix to a deck actually happens. And watch whether Google lets these chat-made files open straight in Docs and Slides for collaborators, which would make Gemini the front door to its office apps.

Run your next draft there. Count the pastes you skip.
