Reddit moves to logins as AI search cuts its traffic
Reddit said Oct. 29 it will shift to a logged-in-only site, testing outside the US this quarter, after search referrals fell by more than 1 million a week in October. The free answers AI search has been serving up are going behind a login.

The biggest pile of human answers on the web is going behind a login.
Reddit said in its third-quarter shareholder letter, filed Oct. 29, that "a key piece of work to retain new audiences is shifting Reddit to a logged-in-only experience." It will begin testing in select markets outside the US in the fourth quarter. The reason sits a page earlier in the same letter: search traffic is falling, fast.
Search stopped sending people
Reddit's letter says its search referral traffic "was down meaningfully in Q3, with the decline accelerating later in the quarter." During October, it says, search traffic dropped by more than 1 million referrals per week on average.
More than 1 million referrals a week.
The company warns that if the rate of decline continues, its daily active uniques could fall in the fourth quarter "by a low-double-digit percentage from our current base of 130 million."
The business is still growing. Revenue was $895.0 million, up 53% from a year earlier. Daily active uniques averaged 130.3 million, up 12%, but US users fell 2% year over year. Other revenue, which TechCrunch reports includes AI data licensing, rose 35% to $48 million.
CEO Steve Huffman was blunter on the earnings call. "The reality is, the AI mode does not drive traffic, not for us and not to anybody, as far as I know," he said, according to Engadget.
The data is the moat now
The letter is plain about the second motive. A logged-in site "also allows us to protect access to Reddit's extremely valuable corpus of data."
Read that next to the traffic numbers. AI search answers your question with what forums wrote, and you never visit the forum. Reddit's response is to stop handing the source material to anyone who isn't signed in. Web crawlers and web scraping that rely on the logged-out site lose the easy path.
Yes, the test starts small, and TechCrunch reports Reddit still calls a logged-out front page important. The direction is set anyway.
What changes for you
If you build or use AI search and research tools, Reddit threads are where a lot of practical, first-hand answers live. Expect that material to get harder to reach without a licensing deal.
If you publish anything online, Reddit's chart is a preview. A site with 130 million daily users just told investors that search is costing it more than a million referrals a week. Plan for readers who get your answer without ever clicking.
Reddit's own letter frames the shift the same way: "Web search is evolving from a gateway to the web to becoming an AI-powered destination itself."
What to watch
Watch the first test markets, and whether logged-out visitors get a hard login prompt or a gentle nudge. Huffman said the company is still deciding when that hard prompt arrives, Engadget reports.
Watch the licensing talks too. Huffman said there are "active discussions" but gave no details.
Reddit guided fourth-quarter revenue to $1,000 million to $1,030 million, so it expects to keep growing while it closes the door.
The open web just got smaller. Check where your own traffic comes from.
