Oracle will rent Google TPUs as OpenAI reportedly buys in
Oracle says Google's TPUs reach its cloud in 2027, the first hyperscale cloud outside Google to offer them, and The Information reports OpenAI plans to buy the chips too. Nvidia now has a real rival for the compute you rent.

Google's chips are leaving Google's house. That will reach your API bill, slowly.
Oracle gets TPUs, and OpenAI reportedly wants them
Oracle said on Oct. 27 at Oracle AI World in Las Vegas that Google's Tensor Processing Units will be available on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, according to Oracle's release. Oracle calls it the first time TPUs will be offered on a hyperscale cloud outside Google.
Availability starts in calendar 2027, with what the companies call a multi-year ramp. The release gives no pricing and no regions.
The release names Google's eighth-generation TPUs: TPU 8t for training and TPU 8i for inference. It says TPU 8t delivers nearly 3x the compute performance per pod of the previous generation.
"Bringing Google TPUs to OCI gives customers access to multiple leading AI compute architectures in one cloud," said Mahesh Thiagarajan, president of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
Later that day, Reuters reported, citing The Information and a person familiar with the matter, that OpenAI plans to buy Google's AI chips. No terms were disclosed. OpenAI declined to comment, and Google did not immediately respond, Reuters said.
Nvidia's biggest customers now have a second door
OpenAI is already among the largest buyers of Nvidia's GPUs, Reuters notes. It began renting Google's chips in June 2025, and in June it unveiled its first custom chip, built with Broadcom.
Buying TPUs would be a bigger step than renting them.
Reuters also reports that Google began selling TPUs directly to some customers this year, and that deals with customers including Anthropic have driven demand.
Put the two pieces together. Compute that you could rent only from Google's own cloud now has a second landlord, and reportedly one of Nvidia's biggest customers as a buyer. If you rent AI compute, the alternative to the Nvidia GPU just got a wider front door.
On paper, anyway. None of the Oracle capacity exists yet, and the OpenAI deal is one source's account.
What it changes for you, and when
If you call a model through an API, nothing this quarter. Competition among chip suppliers reaches token prices with a lag, and Oracle's TPU capacity arrives in 2027.
The date that matters:
Calendar 2027.
If you train, fine-tune or serve your own models, this is the time to ask what it would take to run outside CUDA. Code written tightly around Nvidia's software doesn't move to TPUs for free. A team that can run on both will have more clouds bidding for its work.
If you buy compute from Oracle today, ask your account team what the TPU ramp looks like for your region. The release doesn't say.
Watch for a confirmation and a price sheet
Watch for OpenAI or Google to confirm the purchase, and for Oracle's first TPU pricing. Those two facts turn a chip story into a cost story.
Then hold them up against your GPU bill.
