Google makes school AI opt-in, and Search goes with it

Google says Gemini and Search will be off for K-12 student accounts until administrators turn them on, and a school that blocks AI also loses Search. That is control with a price tag, and schools now have to name it.

Google gave schools an off switch for AI. It is wired to Search.

In a blog post on November 3, Chris Phillips, Google's VP and general manager for education, wrote that Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search "will be entirely off for K-12 student accounts until school administrators explicitly turn them on."

The switch flips the default. Schools opt in.

Google told Engadget that administrators can turn the products on one at a time rather than all at once. Phillips wrote that Google will "share more specifics with schools in the coming months ahead of the changes rolling out."

The condition is Search. Phillips told The New York Times, as TechCrunch reported, that "Search and AI are deeply integrated." Students at schools that restrict AI altogether "will not have access to search, and they'll see a message from their school that indicates it's not available."

Google built a tutor into the same announcement

The same post launched Guided Learning, an AI tool that walks students through work step by step, in Google Classroom worldwide.

Teachers assign Guided Learning activities anchored in class material and get real-time insight into where a class needs help, according to Google. A Guided Learning pilot inside Search for student accounts starts in select U.S. schools later this month, then expands to other districts in the coming months.

Google says it is changing Search for schools so that AI Mode and AI Overviews give step-by-step guidance instead of quick answers to schoolwork, according to CNBC.

The backlash came fast

Politicians read the Search condition as leverage.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote on X that "Google is trying to use its monopoly power to force AI into our public schools," CNBC reported. Sen. Bernie Sanders called the policy "extortion." Former FTC Chair Lina Khan said it shows "the danger of allowing an unregulated monopolist to control an essential service."

Google's answer, in an X post CNBC cited, was that the products are off by default and "schools are in control."

Both things can be true. Defaulting AI off for kids is the right call, and Google deserves credit for it. Engadget notes Google had turned some AI features on by default in Classroom in August and reversed course after educators pushed back.

But an off switch that also turns off Google Search is a hard choice dressed as a free one. For most schools, Search is not optional.

What it means if you run a school's tech

The default changes. Your paperwork does not write itself.

Expect to make separate calls on Gemini, Classroom's AI features and Search. Google says they can be enabled individually. Write down why you chose each one, because parents and boards will ask.

If you build education software that sends students to Google, test what happens when Search is off for their account. A blocked page in the middle of a lesson is your support ticket, not Google's.

What to watch

CNBC reports Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley opened an inquiry into Google's AI push in classrooms last month. The Search condition hands them a sharper question.

Watch the admin details Google promised. Then watch how many schools pick no Search at all.
