Uber says AI agents booked just 4 rides in its busiest week

AI agents ordered four Uber rides and about 500 Uber Eats orders during Halloween week, out of roughly 320 million trips and orders, Uber said on its earnings call. Agentic shopping is a demo, not yet a channel.

Four.

That's how many Uber rides AI agents booked during the company's busiest week of October.

Uber disclosed the figure on its third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, TechCrunch reports. Agents also placed about 500 Uber Eats orders that same week.

The numbers from the call

CFO Balaji Krishnamurthy gave the figures, per TechCrunch. The week in question was Halloween week, when Uber handled about 320 million trips and orders across rides and delivery.

Four rides and about 500 food orders, out of roughly 320 million.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi didn't oversell it. "It is very, very early and very limited traction that we are seeing so far," he said, according to TechCrunch.

He also made the case for staying in. "Every single AI system company is talking to us," Khosrowshahi said, and he called agents "another opportunity to reach our platform." He counted about eight major AI assistants on the market and said he expects more than 10.

Uber isn't the only one seeing this. TechCrunch reports DoorDash said it had received only a few hundred orders from AI agents.

Why so few

Uber offered the plain explanation, per TechCrunch. Booking a ride in Uber's app takes about 50 seconds on average. Reordering a favorite meal takes about 90 seconds.

An agent has to beat that, and for a task you've done a hundred times, it mostly can't. Asking a chatbot to get you a car means typing a request, checking what it picked and confirming the price. The app already remembers where you live.

This is the useful kind of reality check. Agentic commerce has been pitched as the next way people shop. Uber's numbers say that for repeat purchases with a fast app, people aren't switching.

That doesn't make the idea wrong. It says where it fits. Agents earn their keep on tasks that are slow, rare or complicated for a person: comparing many options, filling long forms, coordinating several bookings at once. A ride home is none of those.

What it means for you

If you build an AI agent that transacts, pick tasks where the human path is painful. Measure your agent against the app it replaces, in seconds and taps, not against a demo.

If you run a store or service, keep your agent integrations cheap for now. Expose what agents need, watch the numbers, and don't reorganize around traffic that hasn't arrived.

If you're an investor reading agent-commerce pitches, ask for the Uber number. Orders per week, through agents, measured.

What to watch

Uber's next earnings call. Khosrowshahi said he hopes for more traction, and every major assistant maker is talking to Uber. If four becomes four thousand by spring, agents found a job. If it stays in the single digits, the app wins.

Count the rides.
