Apple's touchscreen MacBook Pro runs big LLMs on device
Apple's new MacBook Pro with M5 Pro or M5 Max adds a touch OLED screen and up to 128GB of memory, from $2,899, shipping Nov. 6. Apple says M5 Max runs models with hundreds of billions of parameters locally but gives no speeds, so wait for real numbers.

A laptop that holds a frontier-size open model is now a real product. How fast it runs is still Apple's secret.
Apple unveiled a new MacBook Pro on Oct. 28 with a touch-enabled PROLED XDR tandem OLED display, the first touchscreen on a Mac. It comes with M5 Pro or M5 Max, up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage. Pre-orders are open, and it ships Nov. 6.
What Apple announced
Apple says each GPU core has a Neural Accelerator built in. It gives no throughput figures for them.
The headline AI claim is that M5 Max can run LLMs with "hundreds of billions of parameters entirely on device." Apple names no model and gives no speed or comparison. The release also shows a coding agent running on an on-device LLM, again without numbers.
Prices in the U.S. start at:
- $2,899 for the 14-inch with M5 Pro.
- $3,399 for the 16-inch with M5 Pro.
- $4,499 for the 14-inch with M5 Max.
- $4,799 for the 16-inch with M5 Max.
The screen goes to 2,000 nits peak brightness and 120Hz. M5 Pro drives up to three external displays and M5 Max up to four.
Memory is the spec that matters
For running models yourself, memory sets the ceiling. A model's weights have to fit, with room left for the KV cache that grows with your prompt.
The math is simple. With 4-bit quantization, each parameter takes half a byte. A 200-billion-parameter model needs about 100GB for weights alone. That fits in 128GB, barely, and only with the top memory option.
So Apple's claim is plausible on capacity. Speed is the open question, and Apple didn't answer it.
If you want more room, Apple's Mac Studio with M5 Ultra now offers 512GB of memory, a $15,500 upgrade that puts the cheapest 512GB configuration at $22,299, MacRumors reported. The M5 Max Mac Studio still tops out at 128GB.
Who should buy it, and who should wait
If you work offline, handle data you can't send to a cloud model, or want an agent running on your own machine, this is the Mac built for it.
If you mostly call cloud APIs, the touchscreen is the news and the AI hardware is a nice extra. Apple makes its big-model claim for M5 Max, not the $2,899 M5 Pro.
The Mac is also becoming a place agents work. Apple opened Keynote, Pages and Numbers to AI agents through MCP this week.
Watch the first benchmarks
Reviews land when the machines ship on Nov. 6. Look for tokens per second on a named open model at 128GB, and for how much the Neural Accelerators speed up prompt processing.
No numbers, no purchase. Wait a week.
